The UK Government Expresses Interest in Supporting Nusantara as a Carbon-Neutral City

NUSANTARA - The Nusantara Capital Authority (NCA), through the Deputy for Environment and Natural Resources (LHSDA), received a visit from a delegation of the United Kingdom Government to IKN on February 21, 2024. The visit was attended by the British Ambassador to Indonesia, Dominic Jermey, and the Second Permanent Under Secretary at the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO), Nick Dyer, along with their entourage. This visit aimed to observe the development of Nusantara with the concepts of a Forest City and a carbon-neutral city.

Previously, the British Ambassador, Dominic Jermey, and his team had an audience with the Chairman of the NCA, Bambang Susantono, at the NCA Office in Jakarta on February 19. During this meeting, the Chairman and the British Ambassador exchanged ideas on various important issues, including climate change, sustainable development agendas, and government-private sector cooperation.

The development of Nusantara as a Forest City aligns with the British government's prioritization of environmental and climate issues as solutions in current development.

Bambang Susantono, the Chairman of the NCA, suggested the need for the British Ambassador and his team to see the conditions of Nusantara in the field. "Seeing is believing," said the Bambang.

On the next occasion, the Deputy for Environment and Natural Resources of NCA, Myrna Asnawati Safitri, invited the British government delegation to visit Nusantara. Their first visit was to see the implementation of hydroponic urban farming in one of the greenhouses. As part of NCA’s efforts to realize the Net Zero Strategy, the NCA targets 10% of the Nusantara area as a modern and efficient food resilience area, as well as climate-resilient.

After the greenhouse visit, the delegation had the opportunity to have a direct dialogue with farmers affiliated with the Capital Farmers Association. In the discussion, the farmers expressed their desire to continue learning about environmentally friendly farming. Initiatives for regenerative and climate-resilient farming have begun in Nusantara. The friendly dialogue, along with tasting melons harvested by the farmers, took place intensively in Lamin Tani, Sukaraja Village, Sepaku, Nusantara.

"The NCA will continue to accompany the capital's farmers' association in supporting regenerative farming, starting from urban farming training, providing modern farming facilities, to online-based marketing training that is useful for expanding the purchasing power of agricultural products. This provides security for farmers so that they can focus on developing their farms without worry," said Myrna.

The delegation also had the opportunity to visit the development progress in Nusantara, from the Nusantara Zero Point to the development progress in the Core Government Center Area (KIPP).

The activity concluded with tree planting in the Miniature Tropical Rainforest of Nusantara. Here, the delegation planted local seedlings such as damar, keruing, red meranti, and kapur. In the Miniature Tropical Rainforest, the delegation was also invited to see the plants that were planted earlier by the President of the Republic of Indonesia.

"Hopefully, with this visit, Indonesia and the UK can work together to build IKN into a carbon-neutral city that is not only proud of Indonesia but also the world's community," said Ambassador Dominic Jermey.
