13 UN Special Agencies Support Nusantara Development

JAKARTA – The Nusantara Capital Authority (NCA) is supported by the United Nations (UN) to prepare the Nusantara National Capital as a sustainable forest city and smart city. This was conveyed at the NCA meeting with the UN at the NCA Office, Menara Mandiri II, Jakarta on Tuesday (17/10/2023).

Chairman of the NCA, Bambang Susantono explained that Nusantara development cannot be realized without collaboration to work together to make Nusantara as city for all. "This collaboration is a history making moment, not only for Indonesia but also the world," he said.

This meeting is a continuation of the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between NCA and the UN to work together to build sustainable cities in Nusantara at UN Headquarters, New York on March 21st, 2023.

UN Resident Coordinator, Valerie Juliand stated that this collaboration was the first time in history because it tried to apply the points of sustainable development goals (SDGs) to something that was still being worked on, namely Nusantara.

"The success of developing the Nusantara as a smart and sustainable city will be a new era for Indonesia," she added.

On this occasion, representatives from 13 UN special agencies were also present to discuss joint initiatives in various efforts to realize the eight main principles of Nusantara development, namely building in accordance with nature; reflects unity in diversity; connected, active, and accessible; enables low carbon emissions; become circular and growing; promote safety and accessibility; ensuring safety and efficiency through technology; and increasing economic opportunity for all.

These specialized UN agencies include the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Labor Organization (ILO), International Organization for Migration (IOM), United Nations Development Program (UNDP) , United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), UN-Habitat, United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Industrial Development Organization ( UNIDO), United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), and UN Women.

The results of this meeting will later be discussed further in bilateral way between NCA deputies and UN specialized agencies in related fields to conclude cooperation agreements and implement joint programs according to NCA's needs with UN support.

It is hoped that from this collaboration, the implementation of SDGs in developing Nusantara as a liveable and loveable city can become a showcase for many countries in the world. Furthermore, Valerie hopes that PBB can be present at the inauguration of Nusantara in August 2024.

"I would be very happy if I could attend the inauguration of Nusantara next year. That way, we can all remember our journey together in building Nusantara," concluded Valerie.
